Woking Newborn Photography | A Simple, Natural Newborn Photo Shoot
The first couple of weeks with a new baby can be a bit of a whirlwind. I remember when my daughters were born, and whole days would pass in the blink of an eye and. It all feels like a bit of a blur now.
Remembering this, it always feels incredibly special to be trusted by a family to capture these early days for them – to create a record of of their precious newborn baby’s first days. So that when the newborn haze has lifted, and their baby is much bigger and older, they can still look back and remember how absolutely gorgeous and teeny tiny their sweet newborn was.
Today I’m sharing some moments from this beautiful baby girls’ newborn session when she was 9 days old, and still small enough to fit into her parents’ hands. It was wonderful to meet this lovely family and capture this precious time for them.
Perfect Timing For A Newborn Photography Session
9 days is a very good age for a newborn session to take place. Typically, most of my newborn sessions take place when babies are aged between 5 and 14 days old.
During this window babies are still very sleepy, and typically enjoy being curled up in foetal like positions, like the ones they were in in the womb. You’ll often see that very small babies like this keep their legs pulled up towards their tummy all day long – which can make nappy changes a little challenging!
All of this makes it an ideal time for newborn photography – babies enjoy being in the ‘curly’ newborn poses and are sleepy and relaxed enough for long periods for me to gently pose and photograph them.

Now you might be wondering how on earth we knew when to book this photo shoot in for, as most babies aren’t born exactly on their due date.
Most families book their newborn session with me before their baby is born, and because we don’t know exactly which date their baby will arrive I book them in without a shoot date, and make a note of their due date.
When their baby is born they let me know and we set a date at that stage, to make sure it falls into the right window. I only photograph a small number of newborn babies each month, and keep my diary nice and flexible to accommodate early and late arrivals.

A Calm, Relaxed Newborn Photo Shoot Experience
Often I’m one of the first people to meet a new baby, and for some families their trip to the studio is their first trip anywhere since their baby was born. So it’s really important to me that their photo shoot experience is calm, relaxed and comfortable.
Most of the time during a newborn session is focussed on solo baby photographs, and whilst I photograph their baby parents can sit back, relax and watch, enjoy a warm drink and snacks or catch up on some sleep if they prefer!
I use a careful blend of wrapping, white noise, warmth and timing so that baby is happy, relaxed and ready to snooze…just like this gorgeous little one did through her session.
There’s also plenty of time to pause for feeds and cuddles as and when baby needs them.
As well as capturing lots of different photographs of baby on their own, I’ll also capture their gorgeous little details – teeny fingers, tiny toes and all of their beautiful facial details. And there’s also plenty of time for family photographs too.
I’ve put together a few more of my favourites from this lovely family’s newborn session below, and I really hope you enjoy seeing them…
