What to Look for in a Newborn Photographer

If you’re expecting a baby and starting to look for a newborn photographer, it can be hard to know what you should actually be looking for.
A quick search will usually bring up lots of photographers, all with lovely images and warm words about capturing precious memories. But when your baby is only a few days old, I’m sure you’ll want to know that you’re making a well considered decision.
I’m Clare, a newborn, baby and family photographer based near Hampton Court, and I’ve been photographing babies for more than 10 years. Over that time I’ve worked with hundreds of families, and I know how overwhelming this stage can feel when you are already making so many decisions before your baby arrives.
So in this article, I want to make it simpler by talking through the most important things to look for when choosing a newborn photographer.
The main things to look for in a newborn photographer are style, newborn experience, safety, consistency, session approach, availability, clear pricing and honest reviews. In this article we’ll explore each of these in more depth.

1. A style you genuinely love
There are many different styles of newborn photography.
Some photographers specialise in posed studio portraits, some offer more natural lifestyle photography at home, and others sit somewhere in between.
Some use props, headbands and buckets, while others keep things very simple and baby-led.
The important thing is not which style is “best”, but whether the photographer’s work feels right for you. Try to look beyond one or two favourite images and ask yourself whether you would be happy if your full gallery looked like the rest of their portfolio.

2. Newborn experience and training
Newborn photography is very different from photographing older children, weddings or families. It needs patience, a calm approach and an understanding of how to handle and pose tiny babies safely.
Look for a newborn photographer who regularly photographs newborns and who can explain their training and experience clearly. This is one of the best ways to tell whether someone is truly experienced in this area, rather than working with newborns occasionally.

3. A clear and reassuring approach to safety
Safety is one of the most important things to look for.
An experienced newborn photographer should be able to talk confidently about how they keep babies safe and comfortable throughout the session. If they offer advanced poses or photographs using props such as bowls, buckets or other objects, those images should be created safely, often as composite images rather than with the baby left unsupported.
You should also feel reassured by the way they talk about handling, hygiene, warmth and following the baby’s lead.

4. Consistency across their portfolio
A photographer’s website and portfolio can tell you a lot.
Look for consistent quality across lots of sessions rather than just a handful of standout images.
Are the babies photographed beautifully throughout? Is the lighting flattering? Does the editing feel polished and in keeping with the style you like? Do the galleries suggest they have photographed many babies, not just a few?
Consistency is a strong signal of experience.

5. A session style and setting that suit your family
It is also worth looking at how the session works in practice, and considering whether this is right for your family.
Does the photographer work from a studio, come to your home, or offer both? Do they include parents and siblings, or focus only on the baby? Do they use props, or keep things more natural and simple?
The right choice will depend on your preferences and the kind of photographs you want.
6. Their preferred age window and availability
Newborn photography usually takes place very early, often within the first two weeks for more posed sessions, although some photographers also photograph older newborns or have a wider window depending on their style.
Ask about availability and how booking works around due dates. You don’t want to do all your research only to discover that your chosen photographer is fully booked or doesn’t photograph babies at the age your session would need to happen.

7. Clear information about editing, products, delivery and pricing
Parents are often surprised by how much the overall experience can vary from one photographer to another.
Some include a high level of retouching as standard, while others offer very little. Some deliver images quickly, while others have a much longer turnaround time. Some photographers offer only digital files, while others also offer printed products such as albums, framed wall art or fine art prints. Pricing structures can also vary a lot depending on experience and what’s included.
Look for a transparent process and pricing, so you understand what you are paying for, what happens after the session, what products are available, and when you can expect to see your photographs.

8. Reviews that talk about more than just the images
Finally, look at what other parents say.
Reviews are especially helpful when they mention the experience as well as the photographs.
Did parents feel relaxed and looked after? Did the photographer handle the baby gently? Did they feel reassured and comfortable during the session?

Summary
If you’re wondering what to look for in a newborn photographer, I would focus on these things: a style you love, newborn-specific experience and training, a clear commitment to safety, consistency in the portfolio, a session style that suits your family, clarity around age and availability, straightforward information about editing, products and pricing, and reviews that give you confidence in the whole experience.
Beautiful photographs matter, of course. But so does feeling that your baby will be in safe hands and that the session will feel calm, professional and well organised.
