Family Photography In West London
Last month I spent a sunny Saturday morning photographing this lovely family in their favourite park. I’m excited to be able to share some of my favourite pictures from their West London family photography session with you today.
This was one of those mornings that reminds me why I love what I do. Not only was the sun shining and the sky was blue, but the session was filled with laughter, joy and connection. There is surely nothing better than being able to photograph these things for a living!
Our Outdoor Family Photo Shoot in West London
We started the session early in the morning to beat the crowds and enjoy the best light.
Typically, the best time for outdoor portraits is in the first couple of hours after sunrise and the last couple of hours before sunset. The light is softer at these times than in the middle of the day, and as a result creates more flattering portraits.
As it happens, the very beginning of the day tends to be the time that young children are likely to be happy and relaxed so an early start ticked all the boxes.

Choosing The Best Locations For Family Portraits
I always visit shoot locations before a session to find the best spots for photographs and plan the photo shoot. Our first port of call for this session was the beautiful shady spot in the pictures above, where the sunlight was filtering through the trees.
We started the session with photographs of the whole family. I always find this is a great way to help everyone get used to being in front of the camera. After all, having a professional photo shoot isn’t something that most of us do every day!
As the shoot progressed and everyone warmed up, I spent time photographing each parent with their son, and of course their gorgeous boy on his own.
We soon moved on, and followed a trail I had planned through the park taking in the beautiful springtime flowers, climbing trees, playing with sticks (as you do when you’re two) and generally having fun.
Choosing The Best Clothes For Outdoor Family Photographs
I know that one of the things that families spend the most time thinking about before their photo shoot is what everyone should wear. I understand this completely; if you’re investing in professional photographs you’ll want to make sure every detail is considered.
And the reality is that when it comes to clothes and photographs, a little bit of planning can have a big impact on how polished the final photographs look.
Before each session I share a style guide to help each family plan their outfits. The idea is to be coordinated, but that doesn’t mean that everyone has to be matching. As you can see this family coordinated their outfits beautifully!
