A Natural Newborn Photo Shoot | Wandsworth Newborn Photography
I’m delighted to share this baby boy’s newborn session with you today, which took place at my South West London studio when he was 10 days old.
The ideal time for a newborn session is when babies are between 5 and 14 days old, so this was perfect timing. During this window babies typically spend most of the day sleeping and are most likely to be settled and relaxed during their shoot. At this age babies also typically enjoy being curled up in womb-like poses, which makes the newborn photography poses comfortable for them.
Having the shoot so early in your baby’s life means that it’s best to plan ahead so most families book their session before their baby is born. Because babies rarely arrive on time, I make a note of their due date when they book and then we confirm the date of their session once their baby arrives.

A Natural, Baby Led Approach To Newborn Photography
At the studio I have a large selection of blankets and wraps in soft, neutral tones. And before each session I’ll work with the family to choose a colour theme that fits their style, and complements their home decor should they choose to display the pictures on the wall.
For this baby boy’s session his parents chose a cream colour scheme, which worked beautifully.
During a newborn session I spend the majority of the time photographing the new baby, and take a baby-led approach. I follow each baby’s lead and if they need to pause for a feed, nappy change or cuddle we will do just that. I build plenty of time into the session to allow for these breaks, so there’s no rush.
As you can see this baby boy snoozed very peacefully whilst I was photographing him, but also had some periods of time where he was awake and relaxed. This gave me the opportunity to capture some photographs of him awake where we could see his beautiful eyes too!
Photographing The Little Details – Baby Toes and Tiny Fingers
During every newborn session I also capture the tiny little details that make babies so unique. The tiny toes, the little finger nails and all of their gorgeous little facial features.
Babies change and grow so quickly during their first year, and I think it’s really special to have a record of these precious little details from their early weeks. How gorgeous are this little one’s features…
Time For Family Photographs With Your Newborn Baby
At the end of the session we switched our focus to family photographs. I captured each parent on their own with their new baby, and of course the whole family together. This is one of my favourite photographs that we took:
I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing some of my favourites from this baby boy’s newborn session.
