Richmond-Upon-Thames Newborn Photography
I’m excited to share this gorgeous baby girl’s newborn photo shoot with you today, which took place at my South West London studio when she was just under two weeks old.
The Perfect Timing For Newborn Photography
This was perfect timing; the ideal time for a newborn session is when babies are between 5 and 14 days old. During this window babies typically enjoy being curled up in womb-like poses, which makes the newborn photography poses comfortable for them. At this age babies will also spend most of the day sleeping and are most likely to be settled and relaxed during their shoot.
As a mum I know first hand what a whirlwind those first days with a baby are, so I do everything I can to make the shoot a relaxed and enjoyable experience. My studio, which is a short walk from Hampton Court Palace, is a calm, relaxing space. And whilst I photograph baby, their parents are my guests. They can sit back, relax, enjoy a tea or coffee and even catch up on some much needed sleep!

Choosing A Date For The Newborn Session
Like most of my clients, this baby girl’s parents booked their session before their daughter was born; as sessions take place so soon after baby’s arrival it’s best to plan ahead to ensure your space in my diary is secure.
Of course, most families don’t know exactly when their baby will be born. So when they book I make a note of their due date when they book and then we confirm the date of their session once their baby arrives.
Timeless, Natural Newborn Photography
I specialise in creating natural, timeless newborn photographs. No props, no babies in buckets and no unnatural poses. My goal is always to create beautiful photographs that capture each baby’s gorgeous details, but that won’t go out of fashion.
I have a selection of blankets and wraps at my studio in soft, natural colours. And before each session I spend time helping each family choose the colour scheme for their shoot. For some families there’s an immediate preference. On other occasions it can be helpful to consider your decor at home, and which colours might complement it best when your pictures are hung on the wall.
As you’ll see, we used a combination of light grey and white for this baby girl’s session.
Family Photographs With Your Newborn Baby
During a newborn session I’ll spend the majority of the time photographing the new baby, and take a baby-led approach. I’ll follow each baby’s lead and if they need to pause for a feed, nappy change or cuddle we will do just that. I build plenty of time into the session to allow for these breaks, so there’s no rush.
At the end of the session we’ll take parent and baby photographs and family photographs. These are included in every session – there’s no extra charge. You can see a few of the photographs I took for this family here:
