Surbiton Newborn Photography

Hello, and thank you for visiting my website! I’m Clare, an experienced newborn photographer based just down the road from Surbiton, Close to Hampton Court.

Late last year I had the pleasure of photographing this adorable newborn baby girl and her family at my studio, which is around a 10-15 minute drive from Surbiton or Kingston.

At just under two weeks old she was at the perfect age for a newborn photo shoot; sessions ideally take place when babies are between 5 and 14 days old.

You might ask why these sessions happen so early.

During the first two weeks after birth, babies are typically very sleepy and like to curl themselves into similar positions to the ones they were in in the womb. You’ll often see new babies sleeping with their legs and hands tucked up into their chest at this stage.

This makes it an ideal time for posed newborn photography, as babies are sleepy, enjoy curling up, and more likely to enjoy the different poses.

As newborn sessions happen so early on in a baby’s life, it’s best to plan ahead and book before a baby is born to make sure I have availability when they arrive.

Of course, most babies don’t arrive exactly on their estimated due date! So I will make a note of your due date when you make the booking and we then confirm the date for your session when your baby is born. This means we can make sure it happens at the right time regardless of whether your baby is born a few days earlier or later than expected.

Being a mum of two I completely understand that the initial weeks with a new baby can be a bit of a blur as you get to know your little one and adapt to your new life together.

So I strive to create a relaxed environment for parents, and to make the session as easy as possible for older siblings.

To start this session we focussed on family photographs. This meant that this baby girl’s older siblings could have their turn first, and didn’t have to wait in the studio for the whole session.

As well as photographing these lovely siblings together, we also captured parent and baby photographs and family photographs, to make sure that everyone’s excitement at having a new addition to the family was captured.

After the family photographs, everyone else could relax whilst I focused on capturing precious shots of this gorgeous baby on her own.

There’s a bit of an art to making sure that babies are relaxed and comfortable so that I can gently pose them. During each session I use a careful blend of warmth and soft stretchy wraps to help babies feel warm, cosy and secure. This helps them to relax and sleep peacefully throughout the session.

One thing that I’m often asked by parents is whether I can take some of the ‘detail’ shots that they’ve seen in my portfolio – close up pictures of baby’s fingers, toes, and lips.

The answer is always yes – I take these photographs in every session as standard. I find these little details amazing as they are the things that make each baby unique.

Babies change and grow so much during their first year, but I find that these little features stay with them. And it’s lovely to look back at these pictures and see how many of those gorgeous little details that you see in your child each day were there right from the start.
