A Newborn Photography Session With An Older Sibling

One of the most wonderful things about being a baby photographer is being able to capture a family as they grow. And a few months ago I had the huge pleasure of photographing this gorgeous baby boy and his lovely big sister, who I’d photographed as a newborn three years earlier.

It was so special to be able to photograph them again to mark the arrival of their newest baby. I’m delighted to share some of my favourite photographs from their newborn session with you today.

Capturing Newborn, Sibling and Family Portraits

Having a new baby is a really special time for families, so all of my sessions include plenty of time for family portraits as well as lots of photographs of the new baby on their own.

When a family has older children I’ll usually start the session with the family and sibling photographs, so that the older siblings don’t have to wait too long for ‘their turn.’ I know that waiting around can be hard work for little people (and their parents!)

The older siblings I photograph vary in age. Families who have recently come to the studio with their newborn have had older children with ages ranging from 17 months old to 20 years old. With this in mind I tailor the family and sibling portraits to the sibling ages and the kinds of poses they can comfortably and safely handle. For example, it’s unlikely that a 17 month old can safely hold their newborn sibling in their arms. Whereas a 4 year old can usually manage it safely if they are sitting down.

This baby boy’s big sister was a very mature 3 year old at the time of their session, so as well as some lovely photographs of her holding her baby brother we could also capture the moment below.

Baby Led Newborn Portraits

After the family photographs I spent the rest of the session focussed on the gorgeous baby boy, which meant big sister and her parents could sit back and relax.

When I’m photographing newborn babies on their own I take a baby-led approach – following each baby’s pace. Some babies will snooze deeply and I can gently work through all of the different photographs I’m going to take without stopping.

Other times, a baby will sleep less deeply and we might pause for some feeds and cuddles through the session. There’s no right or wrong way for the session to go –  every baby is unique.

As well as capturing lots of different photographs of baby on their own, I’ll also capture their gorgeous little details – teeny fingers, tiny toes and all of their beautiful facial details.

I’ve put together a few more of my favourite photographs of this baby boy below, and I really hope you enjoy seeing them…
