Natural Newborn Photography In London
I’m delighted to share this gorgeous baby boy’s newborn session on the blog today. He was born during one of the 2020 lockdowns, and I photographed him when he was three weeks old.
It is always such a privilege to capture the precious early days for families who have a new baby. I know from experience what a whirlwind those first weeks are, and so it’s always such an honour to be part of them. This shoot was even more special than usual as this baby boy and his family are good friends of ours.
The Best Age For A Newborn Photo Shoot
Typically I recommend scheduling newborn photos when your baby is aged between 5 and 14 days old.
During this window new babies usually spend long periods of time asleep, and enjoy being curled up in womb-like positions. This means that they are likely to be relaxed and settled through the shoot.
But sometimes things happen – perhaps an extended hospital stay or in this case lockdown – and we have to wait a little longer for the shoot.
At three weeks it’s still possible to complete a full newborn session, but sometimes it takes a little longer if a baby is spending more time awake by then. In this baby boy’s case he snoozed peacefully through the whole shoot, just as he might have done in the first days!
Natural, Timeless Newborn Portraits
I specialise in natural newborn photography – no props, or unnatural poses – the focus is simply on each baby, their family and the connections between them.
At my South West London studio I have a large selection of blankets and wraps in soft, neutral tones. And before each session I’ll work with the family to choose a colour theme that fits their style, and complements their home decor should they choose to display the pictures on the wall.
For this baby’s session his parents chose a cream colour theme which I think worked beautifully.
A Baby Led Approach To Newborn Photography
The majority of each newborn session is spent photographing the new baby. New babies are all so different, and every day with each baby is different from the last so I find it really important to follow each baby’s lead as I pose and photograph them. I take a baby led approach and gently work at their pace. Stopping for feeds and nappy changes if and when we need to.
This baby boy was very relaxed as I photographed him. And after I’d captured a variety of photographs of him alone, we moved on to family photographs; photographs of each parent alone with him, and photographs of the whole family together. You can see a few of my favourites here:

I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing some of my favourite photographs from this gorgeous baby boy’s newborn session.
