Everything you need to know about booking a maternity photo shoot with London photographer Clare Murthy

Welcome – and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I’m Clare, an experienced maternity, baby and family photographer based close to Hampton Court, right on the border of South West London and Surrey.

If you’re considering booking a maternity photo shoot, I’m sure that you probably have some questions, and will want to make an informed decision about who you choose to photograph this special time for you.

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about how my maternity photo shoots work, and what you can expect when you book one.

What Is a Maternity Photography Session?

A maternity photography session is a photo shoot designed to capture the beauty and emotion of your pregnancy.

The focus is on you and your growing baby bump, but it can also include your partner, and older children (if you have them) if you wish.

My photography style is natural, timeless and simple – I don’t use props or novelty outfits in my photography. My goal for every session is to create elegant photographs that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Where Are Maternity Sessions Held?

I offer two location options for maternity sessions – sessions at my studio and outdoor lifestyle sessions.

My studio is located on the border of South West London and Surrey, just a short walk from Hampton Court Palace. There’s plenty of free parking outside, and it’s also close to Hampton Court station, with direct trains from Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, and Surbiton.

If you prefer an outdoor session, I can recommend a variety of locations across Central and South West London, as well as Surrey. We can discuss your preferences and choose the perfect setting for your maternity photo shoot when you get in touch to book.

When Is the Best Time For A Maternity Photography Session?

The ideal time to book your maternity photo shoot is just after your 20 week scan, and we’ll schedule the session to take place between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

This is when your bump is nicely rounded, giving you a beautiful profile while still allowing you to move comfortably.

I recommend booking your session as early as possible to make sure I’m available and you have time to plan and prepare.

If you’re expecting twins or have a higher risk of early delivery it may be better to have your session slightly earlier in your pregnancy. In this case please get in touch with me and we can have a chat about the best timing for your session.

What’s Included In A Maternity Photo Shoot?

When you book a maternity photography session with me, it’s not just about turning up for a photo shoot on the day. I’ll be there to support you from start to finish. All of my maternity packages include:

  • Preparation emails and what-to-wear guides to help you feel confident and ready for your shoot
  • A 30 to 90 minute photo shoot outdoors or at my studio (the duration and location depends on which package you choose)
  • Professional editing and retouching of the photographs from your session
  • A private viewing gallery where you can see the beautiful photographs from your session and choose your favourites.

All of the maternity packages include some digital images from your gallery – the exact number depends on which package you book.

Some of the maternity packages also include a keepsake 8” portfolio featuring two photographs from your session; you can see one in the photograph below.

Most of my clients don’t want to put their maternity photographs on the wall at home, but love the idea of a special, printed keepsake. The portfolio matches this perfectly.

What Happens On The Day Of My Pregnancy Photo Shoot?

You may be feeling a little nervous about being photographed, and my goal for the session is for it to be a relaxed and enjoyable experience for you.

Lots of my clients feel a little nervous at the start of their session, and sometimes not 100% confident in their changing body. But after the first nervous minutes of the session, I can visibly see them relax and start to enjoy themselves – my goal is for you to feel that way too!

Here’s what you can expect to happen on the day of your session:

Welcome and Preparation:

When you arrive at the studio or outdoor location, I’ll help you get settled and walk you through the plan for the session. I’ll answer any last-minute questions and offer tips to help you feel at ease.

Guidance and Posing Tips:

Throughout the session, I’ll guide you through a variety of poses, ensuring you feel comfortable and look your best. I give plenty of hand holding and guidance on what to do, how to stand, and where to put your hands, so you never have to feel awkward or worried that you’re posing badly

Including Family Members:

If you’re bringing your partner or older children, I’ll include them in the session at different points. I’ve worked with hundreds of families with children of all ages, so am well versed in getting the best possible photographs of even the most reluctant older siblings!

Breaks and Flexibility:

I understand that pregnancy can be physically demanding, so we can take breaks as needed. The session times allow for a little flexibility, allowing you to relax and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.

What Should I Wear for a Maternity Photography Session?

Choosing the right thing to wear is probably on your mind, and I’m here to help.

When you book, I’ll share lots of guidance about the best kind of outfits to wear at your maternity photo shoot.

I’ll suggest bringing a few outfits to add variety to your photographs. Form-fitting dresses, empire-line gowns, and jeans with a bandeau top are popular choices.

Keep the colour palette simple and timeless, with neutral tones like white, cream, and black.

I can also help you arrange for a hair and makeup artist if you’d like that extra touch of glamour.

What Happens After the Maternity Photography Session?

One to two weeks after your session, you’ll receive a link to a private online gallery where you can view your fully edited photographs. This allows you to choose your favourite images from the comfort of your home.

All of the packages include a number of digital images, and some also include a keepsake portfolio, as detailed earlier in this article.

I also offer a range of stunning albums and printed products, which you are welcome to order from if you wish.
