Family Photo Shoots In The Lavender Fields Near London
This summer I spent a beautiful, sunny morning at Mayfield Lavender, photographing four lovely families. I’m delighted to share some of the photographs from that day with you today.
Each year I spend one or two mornings in these stunning lavender fields photographing families at my lavender mini sessions.
During a mini session I spend around 20 minutes with each family, and capture a variety of photographs during that time – the whole family together, parents individually with their children, sibling groups and children on their own.
Mini session days are usually busy, lots of fun, and I love being able to meet so many families and document this moment in their lives for them.
The Best Time Of Year For Lavender Photos
The window for lavender photo shoots in the London area is quite small, and falls within the summer months.
As with all plants, the exact time that the lavender is in bloom depends on the weather in any given year and so it does vary year by year. This means that the point at which it’s harvested also varies.
Lavender typically starts to bloom in July, although some years it can be as early as June. I usually find that late July and early August are the optimum time for a photo shoot in the lavender fields and plan my mini sessions around this time each year.
What To Wear For Lavender Family Photos
What you wear for a photo shoot can really change the look and feel of your photographs. So I always recommend spending a bit of time planning your family’s outfits before your lavender photo shoot. As you can see from the photographs, the families who came to my mini sessions did a great job of choosing outfits that work well with the colour of the lavender, and don’t draw attention away from the people in the photographs.
The four principles I recommend considering are:
- Choose 3-4 complementary colours to build your family’s outfits from
- Soft colours work well, as can a pop of colour
- Avoid bold colours, neon and black
- Be prepared for all temperatures – be prepared to layer up or down depending on the weather
I share more information about choosing your family’s outfits in my guide to the best clothes for lavender family photos.
