How to Build a Business That Reflects Who You Really Are

how to build a business that reflects who you really are

As a creative business owner, you probably started your business with the hope of doing work you love, in a way that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

But somewhere along the way you might have found yourself following paths that don’t feel quite right – working with clients who don’t really value the magic that you bring, or following business strategies that don’t align with your goals or personality but are the ‘norm’ for your industry.

When you run a business, you spend so much time working in it, thinking about it, and dreaming about it, that working in ways that feel out of alignment can not only make business feel uncomfortable, it can also impact on the rest of your life too.

The truth is, when your business reflects who you really are, it not only feels better to work in but also attracts the clients you’re meant to work with.

In this post, we’ll explore why aligning your business with your values, strengths and goals for your life is so important, and how you can start building a business that feels authentic to you.

It’s Easy to End Up Out of Alignment In Business

When you look at other businesses in your industry, it can seem like there’s a “right” way to do things.

The most popular marketing strategies, trends, or client types often feel like the benchmarks of success you should aim for. I know that I’ve experienced this in the photography industry – from feeling like I wasn’t running a proper business if I didn’t do ‘In Person Sales’ to agonising about the fact that I wasn’t showing up on Instagram stories every day like other ‘successful’ photographers out there.

But just because it feels like everyone else in the industry is doing certain things, it doesn’t mean that those things are right for you.

Chasing these external markers of ‘success’ without considering whether they’re right for your business can pull you away from what’s important to you in your life, where you want your business to go, and your unique creative vision.

This misalignment might show up as:

  • You feel uninspired or drained by the work you’re doing: Perhaps you’re taking on projects that don’t excite you or working in a way that feels disconnected from your creativity. Over time, this can lead to burnout or a loss of passion for your work.
  • You’re working with clients who aren’t a good fit: Maybe you feel you have to say yes to clients who don’t value your expertise or are looking for something outside your skillset. This can leave you feeling frustrated and questioning your worth.
  • You’re struggling to stick with ‘must do’ marketing strategies: You’ve tried Instagram stories, reels, email marketing—or whatever the “must do” strategies are in your industry—but they feel forced or inconsistent. This can make you feel like you’re failing, even though the issue may simply be that these strategies don’t align with your strengths or how you naturally connect with others.

If any of this sounds familiar, it might be a sign that it’s time to get back in touch with what’s really important to you, and to start building your business in a way that truly reflects this.

Once you do, you’ll find it easier to attract the right clients, enjoy your work, and sustain your business over the long term.

The Benefits of Building a Business That Feels True to You

1. You’ll Feel More Connected to Your Work

When your business aligns with your values and strengths, it’s easier to feel energised and inspired by your work.

You’re doing what feels meaningful to you, and you can see how it fits into the rest of your life and honours what’s most important to you. This helps to sustain creativity over the long term.

2. You’ll Find It Easier To Attract Your Dream Clients

When you show up authentically in your business, the right clients recognise and want to work with you.

You won’t have to convince them of your value—they’ll already see it because they resonate with what you stand for.

Think about the small businesses you enjoy buying from. Chances are you love their product, and the ethos of the person and business behind it. That’s exactly what your clients will feel when you build your business around the things that really matter to you.

3. You’ll Build Long-Term Success

A business that reflects who you really are grows with you; as you evolve, your business evolves too.

You don’t have to worry about trying to be like everyone else in your industry. Instead, you can be guided by your own vision and values, creating a business that feels sustainable and fulfilling.

This approach not only helps you avoid burnout but also ensures your business remains aligned with who you are as you grow and change.

4 Steps To Building A Business That Feels True To You

1. Get Clear on What Matters to You

The first step to creating a business that reflects who you are is understanding what’s most important to you right now.

This is the first thing I do with all of my one-to-one clients – I help them get clear on the things that really matter to them in their life and business, and how they want their business to fit into their life.

Having clarity on this acts as your compass, helping you make decisions that are right for you.

2. Create A Vision For Your Business

Once you know what is most important to you, spend some time imagining what a business that truly reflects who you are looks and feels like.

Think about the types of clients you’re working with and the projects you’re taking on. Go into as much detail as possible and imagine how your daily life looks and feels.

As you do this exercise make sure that as well as including external markers of success (like revenue or client numbers) you also include internal ones, such as how much enjoyment you feel in your work or the impact you’re making.

Once you’ve got a clear, detailed vision for your business write it down or create something visual that will help you to remember it. You can now use this vision to give you a clear direction and stay focused on what’s important.

3. Build Your Belief By Taking Small, Meaningful Steps

One of the reasons your vision might not feel attainable yet is that you don’t fully believe it’s possible for you.

The good news is that belief is something you can build, and the best way to do that is by taking small intentional steps toward your vision.

The right first step will be different for everyone, but could be things like…

  • Updating the language on your website to better reflect your tone and personality.
  • Raising your prices by a small, manageable amount to better reflect the value of what you do.
  • Saying no to working on weekends.

Once you’ve mastered one small step, you can work out what the next step is to take you closer to your vision.

These small steps allow you to see real progress and prove to yourself that change is possible. They also feel far less overwhelming than trying to overhaul everything at once.

4. Surround Yourself with the Right Support

Building a business that truly reflects who you are can feel vulnerable. It often means stepping away from the way things are “usually done” in your industry, which can bring up feelings of self-doubt or fear of judgment.

This is why surrounding yourself with the right support is essential—it helps you stay focused, confident, and grounded as you make changes.

Support can take many forms:

  • A trusted mentor or coach: Someone who understands the unique challenges of running a creative business and can guide you through the process of building an authentic business.
  • A community of like-minded creatives: Connecting with other people who understand what it’s like to run a business and who share your values can be a powerful way to stay inspired and motivated. These relationships remind you that you’re not alone and provide a space to share both wins and challenges.
  • Practical resources and accountability: Having someone to bounce ideas off, provide feedback, or simply encourage you to keep going can make all the difference when self-doubt creeps in.

What Does an Authentic Business Look Like?

Having a business that truly reflects who you are doesn’t mean doing things perfectly or having everything figured out. It means creating something that feels true to you, where your strengths, values, and creative vision shine through in every aspect of your work.

Here are a few ways you might start to notice that your business is starting to reflect who you are:

  • Your marketing reflects your personality and unique creativity instead of following cookie-cutter templates.
  • Your clients feel like a natural fit and you love working with them.
  • You feel confident setting boundaries and saying no to work that isn’t right for you.
