How Much Should I Spend on a Photography Gift Voucher? (2019)
A gift voucher for a family or baby photo shoot can make a wonderful gift, and here at Clare Murthy Photography I often send out gift voucher to clients who are purchasing a shoot for their family or friends.
One of the questions you’re likely to have when you’re purchasing a photo shoot as a gift is “how much should I spend.”
There are two factors that I recommend considering when you decide how much to spend on a gift voucher for a photo shoot:
- What kind of shoot is it for?
- Who will pay the remaining balance?
In this article I’ll share my suggestions for how much you spend on a gift voucher for a newborn, baby or family photo shoot with me, and why I feel it’s important to consider who will pay the remaining balance.
Who will pay the remaining balance?
Most of the time when I’m discussing a gift voucher purchase with a client I’ll recommend that the voucher covers the session fee for the shoot and one or more products afterwards. After all, the recipient may not want to have to pay more to use their gift or may not have the budget to do so. Receiving a more ‘complete’ gift, where their shoot and some products are included will probably feel much nicer to them.
The exception to this is when the gift giver, and the recipient are both going to take part in the photo shoot and the gift giver will be paying for the photographs afterwards. For example, I find that clients often purchase a family photo shoot for their spouse to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, and in this case they’ll simply buy a gift voucher to cover the session fee, and purchase the products afterwards.
How much should I spend on a gift voucher for newborn photos?
When you’re purchasing a gift voucher for a newborn photo shoot I recommend that you spend a minimum of £449. This would cover the cost of a weekday newborn shoot and the lowest priced newborn package.
How much should I spend on a gift voucher for a family photo shoot?
If you’re purchasing a a gift voucher for a family photo shoot for fewer than 6 people, I recommend spending a minimum of £375 on the voucher. This would cover the cost of a weekday family shoot and a 16” x 12” framed print from the shoot afterwards.
Can I spend more than these recommended minimums on the voucher?
Yes, of course. These amounts are suggest minimums, but you can spend more than this if you would like to. Here are some ideas of what a larger amount would give your recipient:
- £600 would cover a weekday or weekend family photo shoot, and a gorgeous handmade print box, which contains 12 mounted images from the shoot.
- £750 would cover a weekday newborn shoot, digital images, and a beautiful memory box filled with 12 mounted images from the shoot.
- £950 would cover a weekday or weekend family photo shoot, and the complete set of digital images as high resolution digital files.
- £1445 would cover a weekday or weekend family photo shoot, and my most popular collection, which includes the complete set of digital images, a large storyboard frame or fine art album and some mounted prints.
