Why a Growth Mindset is the Key to Thriving in Business

Introduction: Why Mindset Matters in Business
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m just not good at marketing” or “I’ll never feel confident selling”, you’re not alone. Many creative business owners feel completely at home honing their craft but struggle with the business side of things.
And I get it. Marketing, selling, pricing, finance – it can all feel overwhelming, especially when it doesn’t come naturally or when you’ve tried before and didn’t get the results you hoped for.
But here’s something to consider – business success isn’t about being naturally gifted. It’s about developing skills over time, just like you did with your creative work.
You weren’t born knowing how to use a camera or how to perfect your artistic style. You learned. You experimented. You improved.
And the same applies to running a business. It’s something you can learn and get better at over time.
This idea – that our abilities aren’t fixed and can grow with effort – is what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset. And if you can embrace it in your business, everything becomes easier.
Fixed vs. Growth Mindset: What It Means for Your Business
Carol Dweck’s research shows that people tend to view intelligence, talents, and abilities in one of two ways:
- A fixed mindset assumes that these traits are stable and unchangeable – you’re either “a business person” or you’re not.
- A growth mindset believes that skills can be developed through learning, effort, and persistence.
For example, when it comes to business:
🛑 Fixed Mindset:
- “I’m not good at marketing.”
- “Selling just isn’t for me.”
- “I don’t have a business brain.”
✅ Growth Mindset:
- “I can find a way to market my business that works for me and my clients.”
- “Selling is a skill I can get better at over time.”
- “Business finances are something I can learn and become good at.”
This matters because…
The way you think about your abilities shapes your actions, and those actions create your results.
For example, if two photographers are struggling to book clients, one with a fixed mindset might think, “People just don’t want to book me. I must not be good enough” and stop trying.
Someone with a growth mindset might say, “I haven’t found the right marketing approach yet” and keep experimenting until they figure it out.
Same challenge, but two completely different responses – and two very different outcomes.
You Don’t Have Just One Mindset – It Can Be Different in Different Parts Of Life & Business
One important thing to understand is that your mindset isn’t fixed across the board. You might have a growth mindset in some areas of your life but a fixed mindset in others.
For example, you might:
✔ Embrace learning in your creative work – experimenting, improving, and seeking feedback.
✔ Be open to improving your client experience – adjusting how you run your sessions based on what works.
But when it comes to selling or pricing, you might suddenly think:
🛑 “I’m just not a natural at this.”
🛑 “I hate promoting myself.”
🛑 “Other people are just better at marketing.”
The good news is that mindset can change. With awareness, practice, and support, you can bring the same open, learning-focused mindset you have for your creative work into your business, marketing, and sales.
Why a Growth Mindset is Essential for Long-Term Success
1. Business is a journey, not a destination
There’s no single “right” way to run a business, and most successful businesses have been built through trial and error.
A growth mindset allows you to:
✔ Experiment with different strategies to see what works.
✔ See failures as learning experiences rather than signs to quit.
✔ Keep improving over time rather than expecting instant success.
2. Confidence is built through action, not before it
Many people think they need to feel confident before they can take action. But confidence doesn’t appear out of nowhere – it comes from doing, refining, and improving.
A growth mindset helps you:
✔ Take the first step, even when it feels scary.
✔ Build self-belief through real experience.
✔ Recognise that confidence grows with every small success.
3. Business, finance, selling, and marketing are skills – not personality traits
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m just not good at business”, remember: no one is born knowing how to run a business – it’s a set of learnable skills.
A growth mindset helps you:
✔ Approach business challenges with curiosity instead of fear.
✔ Seek out learning opportunities instead of assuming you “can’t” do something.
✔ Improve your business approach over time rather than giving up when things feel hard.
4. Resilience and adaptability are key to long-term success
Every business owner faces setbacks – whether it’s a slow month, a difficult client, or a marketing strategy that flops.
A growth mindset helps you:
✔ See setbacks as normal, not personal failures.
✔ Learn from challenges and make adjustments.
✔ Keep moving forward, even when things don’t go to plan.
How to Cultivate a Growth Mindset in Your Business
Shifting into a growth mindset takes practice, but it can completely transform how you approach your business.
Instead of seeing challenges as proof that you’re not good enough, you start viewing them as opportunities to learn and improve. Instead of feeling stuck, you recognise that growth comes through action, reflection, and adaptation.
Here are some ways that you can start:
1. Recognise where you already have a growth mindset
Chances are, you already have a growth mindset in some areas of your life – maybe in your creative pursuits, fitness, or a hobby you’ve worked hard to improve.
Think about something you’re good at now that once felt challenging. How did you get better at it? Did you:
✔ Embrace feedback as a tool for improvement?
✔ Experiment with different approaches until you found what worked?
✔ Trust that consistent effort would lead to progress?
Now, reflect on how you approach challenges differently in business. Do you apply that same openness to learning when it comes to marketing, selling, or pricing? If not, what would happen if you did?
2. Notice and reframe limiting beliefs
The first step in shifting your mindset is becoming aware of the internal stories you’re telling yourself.
Notice any thoughts like:
🛑 “I’m not good at business.”
🛑 “I don’t have a business brain.”
🛑 “Marketing is too difficult.”
Then, challenge and reframe them:
✅ “I am learning how to run my business in a way that works for me.”
✅ “Marketing is a skill I can build over time.”
✅ “I don’t have to be a natural at selling – I can improve step by step.”
The more you practise challenging your inner dialogue, the more you’ll start seeing new possibilities instead of limitations.
3. See challenges and setbacks as learning opportunities
A growth mindset doesn’t mean avoiding mistakes – it means learning from them. Instead of seeing challenges as failures, ask yourself:
✔ “What can this experience teach me?”
✔ “What could I do differently next time?”
✔ “How can I use this setback to refine my approach?”
For example, if you post on Instagram and don’t get the response you hoped for, instead of thinking, “Nobody cares about my work,” shift your mindset to: “This post didn’t land the way I expected. What can I test next time?”
Every challenge contains a lesson if you’re willing to look for it.
4. Just get started – because that’s how you’ll learn and grow
Waiting to feel ready before taking action will keep you stuck. The best way to learn is by doing.
Instead of overthinking or hesitating, ask yourself:
✔ “What’s the smallest step forward I can take today?”
✔ “What’s one thing I can try without overcomplicating it?”
Taking that first step – however small – creates momentum. The more action you take, the more you learn, and the more confident you’ll become.
So if something feels big, overwhelming, or outside your comfort zone, break it down into the next doable step and just begin.
5. Surround yourself with growth-oriented people
The people around you have a huge impact on your mindset. If you spend time with people who see business as a struggle or believe success is only for a lucky few, it’s easy to absorb those beliefs.
Instead, surround yourself with people who are learning, growing, and taking action. This could be:
✔ A business coach who can help you shift your mindset and develop strategies that work for you.
✔ A community of creatives who are also working towards their goals.
✔ Podcasts, books, or mentors that inspire you to think differently.
When you see others embracing challenges, growing, and making progress, it reinforces that you can do it too.

6. Embrace the identity of a lifelong learner
Instead of thinking of yourself as someone who needs to figure everything out right now, start thinking of yourself as a lifelong learner.
This means:
✔ Being curious – approaching new challenges with an open mind.
✔ Giving yourself permission to improve over time – you don’t have to get everything perfect immediately.
✔ Viewing business as an evolving skillset – one that grows with experience, learning, and refinement.
One way to practise this is by changing how you talk about yourself. Instead of saying, “I’m bad at marketing,” try: “I’m learning how to market my business and getting better over time.”
When you see yourself as someone who is always growing, challenges feel less intimidating because they’re just part of the process.
Growth Mindset and My Own Business Journey
Business is one of the areas in my life where I’ve had a growth mindset most of the time. I generally believe in my ability to learn new things and develop new skills.
But that doesn’t mean that business has always been easy – far from it! There have been plenty of mistakes, challenges, and long periods of uncertainty.
The one thing that’s stayed constant is that when I hit a challenge, I usually trust that I’ll figure it out eventually. And I have regular coaching, work with a mentor and listen to growth-oriented podcasts to help me stay in the right mindset.
This is the same mindset I bring to coaching with my clients. I deeply believe that everyone has the potential to learn, grow, and change. I don’t think that anyone is “just bad at business” – they just haven’t found the right approach or given it enough time yet.
How Coaching and Mentoring Can Help You Shift into a Growth Mindset
Developing a growth mindset isn’t just about changing how you think – it’s about shifting how you approach your business, challenges, and decisions. And while mindset work is powerful, it’s not always easy to do alone.
That’s where working with a coach or mentor can really help. They can help you to:
✔ Step outside of your own perspective – Sometimes, the biggest thing holding you back is a belief you don’t even realise you have. Coaching helps you identify the mindset blocks that are keeping you stuck and reframe them so you can move forward.
✔ Turn learning into action – It’s not enough to just know you need a growth mindset, you have to actively practice it in your business. A coach can help you take consistent, meaningful steps that build confidence and create momentum.
✔ Build self-trust and confidence – Growth mindset isn’t just about believing you can improve, it’s also about experiencing progress in real time. With coaching, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own – you have someone who sees your potential, holds you accountable, and supports you in taking action.
✔ Create a business that works for you – Mindset and strategy go hand in hand. The right coach or mentor can help you uncover the selling and marketing strategies that align with who you are – so you’re not just forcing yourself to follow approaches that don’t feel right.
When you work with a coach or mentor, you’re not just learning how to run a business. You’re learning how to think, make decisions, and take action in a way that creates long-term success.

Final Thoughts on Growth Mindset in Business
Building a business isn’t about having all the answers from the start – it’s about being open to learning, experimenting, and adapting over time.
A growth mindset makes everything feel lighter. Instead of seeing challenges as proof that you’re not good enough, you start recognising them as opportunities to learn, refine, and improve.
This shift changes everything – how you show up, how you make decisions, and ultimately, how successful your business becomes.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
If you’re ready to:
✔ Develop more confidence in your business decisions
