A Baby Photo Shoot With A Five Month Old Baby Boy
I’m excited to share some photographs from this happy baby boy’s Baby Milestone Session with you today. I photographed him in September, when he was five months old.
It is always incredibly special to be asked to photograph my clients’ babies. I know first hand what a whirlwind the first year can be and it really means the world to me to be able to make a record of these precious early months for each of the families I meet.
This session was particularly special because this gorgeous baby boy is the son of one of an old friend, and his shoot was the first time I got to meet him!
Is Five Months A Good Time For Baby Photographs?
Five months is a really lovely age for a Baby Milestone Session, and it’s very popular for families who didn’t have a newborn session to schedule their first baby and family photo shoot around this age.
After the newborn stage, and up to three months babies tend to be alert and awake for much longer than they were as newborns, they’re starting to smile and show us their personality, but they haven’t usually reached the stage where they can support their own heads and lift their head up during tummy time.
But by four to five months, babies are typically stronger, can support their own heads and are enjoying tummy time more. They don’t tire so easily and are also showing us lots of their personality. This makes four to five months a lovely time for a photo shoot – there’s lots of lovely expression to capture, babies enjoy the interaction and experience of the shoot, and their new skills and strength mean we can capture a lovely variety of photographs.

What Happens At A Photo Shoot With A Five Month Old Baby?
Every photo shoot with a baby is a little different – because every baby and family is different. Some families will bring a couple of outfits for their baby to wear during the shoot, some will just bring one. Sometimes I’ll just be photographing baby with their parent(s) and sometimes they will have older siblings who will join the shoot too.
But during every baby milestone session I’ll be looking to capture a variety of different photographs of baby on their own, and a variety of different photographs of baby with their family. This variety will depend on each baby’s development stage.
The sessions are quite fast paced – most babies will get tired if the session goes on for too long. But whilst they are fast paced, there is no rush and if a baby needs to have a break, a feed or a cuddle we’ll pause, wait and carry on when they are ready. Usually the sessions last around an hour.
During this baby boy’s session I focussed on photographing him lying comfortably on his back, showing off his amazing tummy time skills and with his parents. He was the happiest little fellow and gave me lots of lovely smiles and fun expressions. I’ve put together some of my favourite moments from his session in this post and I hope they bring a smile to your face too.
