How to Find Photography Clients on Instagram (Without Feeling Burnt Out Or Overwhelmed)
When it comes to using social media to find photography clients, Instagram is an obvious choice. It’s visual, allows us to showcase our work beautifully, and helps us connect directly with potential clients.
But if you’ve ever put effort into curating a beautiful feed, posting consistently… and still heard nothing but crickets, you’re not alone. I’ve been there.
It can feel like everyone else is booking clients through Instagram while you’re stuck wondering why no one is enquiring.
But here’s what I’ve learned: getting clients from Instagram isn’t about luck, chasing trends, or going viral. It’s about having the right strategy and showing up consistently in a way that works for you.
This guide will walk you through how to find photography clients on Instagram in a way that feels natural, effective, and sustainable – without burning yourself out. Whether you’re just starting or refining your approach, these steps will help you gain momentum and start attracting the right people.
1. Get Clear on Who You’re Trying to Attract
Before you worry about what to post, start with the most important question: Who do you want to work with?
Too often, photographers post with no clear audience or goal in mind. Or worse, they create content that speaks to other photographers instead of potential clients. Think about how often you see this – a post with tonnes of comments, all from photographers worldwide.
Instead of posting beautiful work and hoping the right people find you, flip the perspective. Start with what you want the outcome to be.
Ask Yourself:
- Who is your dream client?
- What matters most to them about your work?
- What do they need to hear to trust you and book a session?
This is the process I take my clients through in the Sell Your Services With Confidence workbook. When you’re clear on who you’re speaking to, content creation becomes easier, more strategic, and more effective.
2. Optimise Your Instagram Profile for Bookings
Your Instagram profile is like your website’s homepage. Within seconds, potential clients should know exactly who you are, what you offer, and how to book you.
Yet, so many photographers miss critical information on their profiles. If someone has to search for your location, services, or pricing, there’s a good chance they’ll move on to another photographer.
Quick Instagram Profile Checklist:
Review your profile and check that it ticks all of the boxes below. Does it clearly explain who you are and how people can book you? If not, tweak it!
✅ Profile Picture: A clear, professional image of you.
✅ Instagram Bio: Speak directly to your ideal client. Example: “Helping families capture natural, timeless moments they’ll treasure forever.”
✅ Location: Where are you based? Where do you work? (This is critical!)
✅ Link in Bio: Make it easy to book by linking to your website, inquiry form, or booking page.
3. Create Content That Connects (Not Just Shows Your Work)
Posting beautiful images isn’t enough to get bookings.
Your content needs to build trust, answer questions, and help potential clients picture themselves working with you.
Here’s A Simple 5-Day Content Plan for Photographers That Ticks These Boxes:
- Day One: Behind-the-Scenes: Show your process and what clients can expect.
- Day Two: Why I Love This Image: Share what a particular image means to you.
- Day Three: FAQ: Answer a common question about booking, pricing, or preparation.
- Day Four: Introduce Yourself: Share who you are, your story, and what drives your work.
- Day Five: Educational Tip: Give helpful advice (e.g., “What to Wear for a Family Photo Shoot”).
4. Use Keywords to Get Discovered
Instagram’s algorithm is increasingly focusing on search, meaning that using the right keywords in your bio, captions, and alt text can help your profile show up in relevant searches.
At the time of writing, hashtags are still useful because, like keywords, they help Instagram understand what your post is about and who you’re trying to reach.
Where to Use Keywords for Maximum Reach:
- Your Instagram Bio: (e.g., “Newborn & Family Photographer in Surrey.”)
- Your Captions: (Write naturally, but include phrases your ideal client might search for.)
- Hashtags: Use a mix of industry-specific, location-based, and client-focused hashtags.
Action step: Go through your bio and recent posts—are they keyword-rich and client-focused? If not, make some tweaks!
5. Post Consistently Without Burning Out
You don’t need to post every day, but you do need a repeatable system. Showing up consistently (even twice a week) will always outperform posting daily for a month and then disappearing.
The key to consistency is choosing the right habit – something that you can commit to and repeat every week – even the busy ones. And the way I help my clients to do this is to start with a tiny habit and build from there. You can use the exercises in my Selling Your Services With Confidence workbook to help you do this.
Here are some ideas for a repeatable system – pick the one that works best for you:
3 Posting Systems (Choose One That Works for You):
✅ One: Two Posts Per Week + Three Stories Per Week
✅ Two: Three Posts Per Week + A Weekly Story
✅ Three: Daily Stories + One New Post Per Week
Action step: Pick one of these posting systems and commit to it for the next 30 days.
6. Batch Your Content to Save Time
Creating Instagram content every day can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re juggling shoots, editing, and running your business. The key to staying consistent without spending hours on Instagram every day is batching your content in advance.
Not only does this save time, but it also helps you to:
- Stay consistent, even during busy weeks.
- Reduce decision fatigue by planning your content in one go.
- Create a more cohesive Instagram feed and strategy.
How To Batch Your Instagram Content:
- Plan your posts in advance (this could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly).
- Write your captions in one go (saves time and reduces stress).
- Prepare your visuals (edit, create Reels, or design carousels).
- Schedule your posts using Meta Business Suite or save your ready-to-go Instagram posts as drafts.
Action step: Set aside one day in the next week to try batching your content. Even starting with just one week of planned content will make a huge difference in how you feel about showing up regularly on Instagram!
7. Use a Mix of Content Formats to Reach More People
If you’re only posting single images, you’re limiting your reach. Different types of content (think reels, carousels, single images and stories) do different things – which means using a mix will help you get in front of more potential clients.
What Can Each Instagram Post Format Do For Photographers?
- Reels: Great for reaching new people.
- Carousels: Perfect for storytelling and educational posts.
- Single Image Posts: Showcase a standout image.
- Instagram Stories: Build deeper connections with your audience.
8. Build Community (And Make Instagram More Enjoyable)
Instagram is more than just a platform to showcase your work – it’s a place to connect, interact, and build relationships.
When you engage meaningfully with your audience, your reach and visibility grow organically, and Instagram becomes a more enjoyable experience rather than just another marketing task.
Why Building Community On Instagram Matters
✔️ More Engagement = More Visibility: Instagram prioritises content that gets engagement, so the more conversations you have, the more people will see your posts.
✔️ Avoiding the ‘Posting Into the Void’ Feeling: When you cultivate a community, you won’t feel like you’re shouting into an empty space. You’ll have a network that supports, interacts, and shares your work.
✔️ Warm Audience = More Bookings: People book from people they trust. When you consistently show up, interact, and build relationships, potential clients will feel more comfortable reaching out.
9. Make It Easy for Clients to Book You
Imagine a potential client scrolling through your Instagram, loving your work, and deciding they want to book you. But then… they can’t find how to do it.
The harder it is for someone to book you, the more likely they are to give up – or worse, book someone else. That’s why streamlining your inquiry process is essential.
Make Booking Simple By:
- Adding a Clear CTA to every post (“I’m currently taking bookings for…. Send me a DM to book.”)
- Having a Direct Link in Bio (straight to an inquiry form or booking page.)
- Keeping Your Inquiry Process Simple (fewer steps = more conversions.)
