How to Find The Funds for A Newborn Baby Photo Shoot
So you’re expecting a baby, and would love to have a professional newborn photo shoot. You know how much you would value those photographs of your baby in years to come, but just don’t have the funds.
Before you give up on your dream of new photographs, here are five ideas on how you could fund your shoot.
Ask for gift vouchers
When you have a baby almost everyone you know will buy you or your baby a gift. If you work in a team environment your colleagues might also buy you a gift when you go on maternity leave.
Letting everyone know that you would love a gift voucher to put towards a shoot with a specific photographer could help you to fund all or part of your session fee and products.
And if you feel awkward about telling people what you would like you could just tell your closest family and friends – other people may well ask them what you need or would like, or they may be willing to let everyone know for you.
If this feels like a good option to you, don’t wait until your baby has arrived and you have all the vouchers to book your session – most newborn photographers ask for babies to be 14 days old or younger when they are photographed, so it’s best to book well before your baby arrives. Usually all you’ll need to pay up front is a deposit or session fee.

Include close family members in the shoot and share the cost
Often my clients will bring grandparents to their newborn session too – I absolutely love this! There’s something so special about capturing the bond between a grandparent and their brand new grandchild. And this may also present an opportunity to share the cost – those photographs will be so precious to your baby’s grandparents that they may want to be involved, and share the costs with you.
If this is an option that would work for you I recommend checking with the photographer before your shoot, that they include other family members in the shoot.

Pay in instalments
Another option open to you may be to pay for your photographs in instalments – for example I offer the option to spread the cost of your products over 3 monthly payments. This may mean that you can afford the photographs you would like by breaking the cost down.
Not every photographer will offer this service, so it’s worth doing a bit of research beforehand to find out whether your chosen photographer does, and what their terms and conditions are.
Ask the photographer about a referral scheme
When you’re having a baby then chances are that you know lots of other people having babies too – your friends, family members, or the other couples you’ve met at your antenatal class for example.
If a number of you would like to book a session with the same photographer, you could approach the photographer and ask whether you receive a discount or some other kind of benefit if you all book together, or if you refer X number of other clients to them.
Sell some unwanted items
New babies are tiny, but all of the paraphernalia that comes with them – cots, Moses baskets, buggies, bouncy chairs, Sleepyheads and the like takes up a lot of space and you may find yourself needing to clear some space. Selling the items you no longer need or have space for on E-bay or other selling sites could help you generate the money you need to pay for your newborn photographs.
