Esher Newborn Baby Photographer
Earlier this year I spent a lovely morning photographing this gorgeous newborn baby girl and her family at my studio, which is a short drive from Esher in Surrey.
The session took place when she was 12 days old, which was perfect timing; the ideal time for a newborn photo shoot is when babies are aged between 5 and 14 days old.
During these first two weeks, newborn babies are typically very sleepy and enjoy being curled up into poses that are similar to the position they were in in the womb. This makes this time ideal for capturing sleepy, curled up newborn photographs just like the one below!
Having the shoot so early in your baby’s life means that it’s best to plan ahead so most families book their session before their baby is born. Because babies rarely arrive on time, I make a note of their due date when they book and then we confirm the date of their session once their baby arrives.

This baby girl’s session was during a period of really cold weather, but to keep babies comfortable whilst they are undressed I carefully heat the studio and use lovely soft, stretch wraps. This helps babies to relax and sleep soundly.
During each newborn photo shoot I aim to capture a variety of different photographs of the baby, in different positions whilst they are asleep.
I also love to photograph all of the little details that make each baby unique – their teeny toes and fingers, the curve of their mouth and (if they have them) lovely eyelashes. Babies change and grow so quickly, and having a record of how these little details looked in the beginning is very special.

Most of the time, I find that newborn babies are not very relaxed when they are awake; they often wake up for a feed or nappy change and then want to go straight back to sleep! I build plenty of time into the session to allow for these breaks, so there’s no rush. I simply follow each baby’s lead and wait for them to relax and fall asleep again before continuing the session.
But occasionally some babies have a relaxed, awake period during the session. This little girl did and it was a wonderful opportunity to capture some photographs of her awake, where we could see her beautiful eyes!
At the end of the session, we captured family portraits. I took photographs of this brand new baby girl with each of her parents, and portraits of all three of them together. These are some of my favourite photographs to capture; it’s incredibly special knowing that this is a family’s first portrait together as a family of three (or more for families with older children!)
I’ve put together some more of my favourite photographs from the session below. I hope you enjoy seeing them.
