A Newborn Photo Shoot With A Ten Day Old Baby Boy | Egham Newborn Photography

The first days with a newborn are such an amazing bubble of emotions. Time can feel slow and hazy as you adjust to life with your amazing new tiny human. At other times it can pass in the blink of an eye, and before you know it twenty four hours have passed and your baby is another day older.

This is one of the reasons why being asked to capture these precious first days for families is such a huge privilege. Often I’m one of the first people to meet a new baby, and for some families their trip to the studio is their first trip anywhere. It’s so special to be able to make a record of these early days, so that when the haze has lifted you can remember just how tiny, amazing and wonderful they were when they were first born.

This gorgeous baby boy came to to the studio for his newborn photo shoot when he was just 10 days old.

I know that 10 days old might sound incredibly early to be having a photo shoot, but in fact this is the ideal age for a newborn photo shoot. Typically, the best time for a session is when a baby is between 5 and 14 days old, so this little fellow’s session was right in the middle of the optimum window.

Because this window is so early in a baby’s life, the vast majority of families book their session before their baby is born, to make sure that I will have a session available for them. Most of the time we don’t know the exact date that their baby will be born, so when they book I make a note of their due date, and then we set date for their session when their baby is born. I only take a small number of bookings each month to make sure I can be flexible when babies arrive a little earlier or later than expected.

On the day of this baby boy’s session he was 10 days old, and we started the session with photographs of him on his own. This is where we spend most of the time in a newborn session. I gently work through a series of different photographs of each baby in a variety of different positions – sometimes wrapped and sometimes unwrapped.

Every baby is different, and every day with the same baby is different so the timing of this part of the session is always very variable. Some babies snooze through the whole thing, but more often than not we’ll pause for a feed, nappy change or cuddle. My priority is always to follow each baby’s lead and work at the pace that suits them

As well as capturing this gorgeous baby boy in lots of different ways. I also made sure to capture all of the little details that will no doubt change as he grows – his teeny, tiny fingers and toes, and all of the little facial characteristics that make him unique:

At the end of the session we focussed on family photographs. Being sure to capture photographs of each parent with their brand new baby, as well as plenty of photographs of the whole family together.
