Visiting Dorset With A Toddler – A Holiday Photo Journal

a winter holiday in dorset with a toddler

Over the new year we spent three nights in Dorset with friends. We rented a house, took day trips and went for pub lunches – it was a lovely way to see the new year in.

As I’ve done previously I thought you might like to hear about the places we visited, and what we did. I always find it so useful to hear other parents’ recommendations for travel with children, and I hope you do too!

We based ourselves in Poole, which was very easy to reach from Surrey, and just a short drive from the beaches of Studland Bay and the beautiful National Trust site at Corfe Castle.

We spent the first day visiting Corfe Castle. We parked at the National Trust car park just outside of the town, and followed a walking trail up to the castle. The trail was very manageable for buggies and a scooter, and once we arrived at the castle we left the buggies and scooter at the gates and the children walked / ran up the hill to the castle with us.

As you can see from the photographs it was a really grey day, but the mist made the town look even more picturesque as we looked down from the castle. After we had climbed back down we walked through the town to the Castle Inn – a very family friendly pub – where we had lunch.

On the second day we visited Knoll Beach in Studland Bay. It was pouring with rain when we arrived, so we waited in the car and then walked through lots of puddles to the beach – in December wellies were essential!

Despite the weather the beach was packed with other families and friends going for walks. We had a wonderful time playing on the sand, and splashing in puddles as you’ll see below. Afterwards we warmed up in the National Trust cafe with hot chocolate and then drove on to the lovely Scott Arms for another pub lunch.
