Six Common Concerns About Booking a Maternity Photo Shoot (And How I Can Help!)

common concerns maternity photography

When you’re expecting a new baby, there’s a lot to think about—from setting up the nursery to choosing a baby name, and that’s just the beginning.

Adding a maternity photo shoot to your to-do list might feel both exciting and overwhelming.

You might wonder about how comfortable you’ll feel in front of the camera, whether your bump will look great, or (if you have older children) whether they’ll cooperate.

You’re not alone—many of my clients have these same worries. So in this article I’m going to share some of the most common worries and questions I hear from my clients, and hopefully, ease your mind.

1. “Will I Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera?”

This is the number one concern that most of my clients have. In fact, it is more common for me to hear the words “I’m not very good in photos” at the start of a session than it is for me not to hear them!

It’s totally normal to feel apprehensive about being photographed, especially when you’re carrying a baby and your body is changing – I’ve been there, and completely understand.

But every single time, the same clients who start their session with the words “I’m not very good in photos”  end up totally rocking the shoot and are delighted with the end result!

So how does this happen?

My maternity sessions are designed to help you feel comfortable and confident, and I guide you through each pose, providing gentle direction to help you look and feel your best.

You don’t need to be a model or know how to pose—I’ve got you covered. By the end of the session, you’ll likely forget you’re even having your photo taken!

2. “What Should I Wear?”

Choosing the right outfits for a maternity photo shoot can have a huge impact on the final results, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

Before your session I offer plenty of guidance on what to wear to ensure you feel fabulous and comfortable.

From form-fitting dresses that highlight your bump to flowing gowns that offer a touch of elegance, there are plenty of options to suit your style.

I can even help you arrange a hair and makeup artist if you’d like that extra touch of glamour!

You’ll also find useful suggestions in my previous blog posts and Pinterest boards, which can help you decide on the perfect outfit. Click on the links below to check them out:

3. “When Is the Best Time to Book?”

Timing is a common concern – if you’re anything like me you’ll want to time your session to show off your bump at its most beautiful!

Generally, the ideal time to have your maternity photos taken is between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy and I recommend booking right after your 20 week scan to secure the date.

This window works because your bump is likely to be nice and rounded then, giving you a beautiful silhouette, without you feeling too heavy or uncomfortable.

If you’re expecting twins or multiples, or there’s a chance of an early delivery, we can work together to find the best timing for you. The key is to book early to ensure you get the date and time that suits you.

4. “How Will My Partner and Older Children Fit Into the Shoot?”

If you’re wondering how to include your partner or older children into the shoot, please don’t worry—I welcome families, and have packages that can include just your partner or your partner and older children if you wish.

Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting time for everyone involved, and I believe maternity sessions should reflect the love and anticipation surrounding a growing family.

If your partner or children are joining the session, I can help you to coordinate outfits and ensure everyone enjoys the session.

I’ve photographed hundreds of families over the years so am well versed in keeping children focussed and entertained, so you don’t need to worry about whether your children will ‘perform’ or ‘behave’ on the day.

5. “What If I’m Not Feeling My Best?”

Pregnancy can be physically and emotionally taxing, and you might not always feel like your best self.

This is completely understandable, but it doesn’t have to stop you from capturing the beauty of the moment (even if the moment feels more uncomfortable than beautiful!)

My sessions are designed to be relaxed and stress-free. We can take breaks if you need to, and I make sure to capture the most flattering angles that highlight the beauty of your pregnancy.

I also focus on creating a positive experience that boosts your confidence, so you leave feeling uplifted and empowered.

My favourite piece of feedback after a maternity session was from a client who told me “it doesn’t look how it feels.” She was experiencing a lot of pain during her pregnancy, but her session captured all of the good bits that she wanted to remember – the magical connection with her baby and the beauty of her pregnant body. Giving her positive memories to look back on, rather than only remembering the memory of the pain and discomfort.

6. “What Happens If I Need to Reschedule?”

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, especially when you’re expecting.

You might worry about what happens if you book a shoot and then need to reschedule due to unexpected changes with your pregnancy or health concerns.

I’m here to work with you, and my booking terms allow for these unexpected changes and health concerns. So you can go ahead and make your booking with confidence.
