Choosing Clothes For Your Baby’s Milestone Session

Once you’ve booked your baby’s Milestone Session, your thoughts may turn to choosing clothes for your baby to wear. After all, when you’re investing in professional photography you’ll want to make sure your baby looks just as gorgeous as you imagine they will in the final pictures.
Bringing your own outfits for your baby to wear is optional; here at the studio we have a selection of outfits for babies age 3 months to 13 months that you’re welcome to use. The outfits are all in soft neutral colours and in neutral textures, and you can see some of them in the photographs in this article.
Some families also like to bring their own outfits for the shoot. In this article I’ll explain how you can choose outfits that will give your photographs a timeless, natural finish and complement the style you see in my portfolio.
HOW MANY OUTFITS SHOULD I BRING?
If you’re planning to bring your own outfits, I recommend bringing a maximum of 2 or 3 for the shoot. Most babies age 3 to 13 months have a limited tolerance for having their photograph taken and for getting changed and unchanged multiple times. So, 2 to 3 changes is the maximum that I recommend.
Which Colour Clothes Work Best For Baby Photo Shoots?
When you’re choosing outfits, I recommend choosing clothes in soft neutral colours. White, cream, grey, oatmeal, soft pinks and blues all work well.
It’s also important to avoid clothes with pattern or writing on them as these can be or distracting and will draw the viewer’s eye away from your baby.
Choose Clothes That Fit Well
Babies are constantly growing, and moving through phases of clothes not fitting them, being a little bit too big, fitting them for a very short time and then being too tight again. As a result you may be tempted to dress your baby in an outfit that looks lovely, but is too big for your child.
However, if something is a bit too big it can really look like it’s drowning your baby in photographs. So I recommend choosing items that fit really well, and you may find that you have to put them in a smaller size than usual to get that good fit.
Well fitting rompers, vests, and all-in-ones tend to work really well. Most of the time I recommend avoiding dresses; dresses tend to ride-up when babies are sitting or moving around which means that the dress doesn’t sit in a pleasing or flattering way, and your baby’s nappy is on show.
Capturing Your Baby’s Gorgeous Rolls
Finally, many families like to have a few photographs taken at the end of the shoot of their baby without any clothes on. Those gorgeous chubby rolls don’t last for long once they grow up, and including a few photographs of your baby without any clothes on is a lovely way to document this stage.
If this is something you would like to do, just choose one or two outfits for your baby to wear during the shoot, and we’ll use the last portion of the session to capture them in just their nappy, or without their nappy on.
