Battersea Newborn Photography | Natural Baby Portraits At My SW London Studio
I’m delighted to share this gorgeous baby boy’s newborn session with you today. He was just 12 days old when he visited my South West London studio for his newborn photo shoot, and as you can see was very relaxed and sleepy for his photographs.
The Best Time For Newborn Photographs
The best time for a newborn photo shoot is typically when a baby is aged between 5 and 14 days old, so this was perfect timing.
After this ‘two week window’ babies will often start to spend longer periods awake, uncurl, stretch out and grow larger. And as these changes happen the likelihood increases that a baby may not be able to manage some of the poses, and may spend a larger proportion of the shoot awake.
You might be wondering how this baby’s parents could have known when to book their shoot to catch this window, as most families don’t know exactly when their baby will be born. When a family books a newborn session we book them in to secure their spot, and then confirm an exact date once your baby is born. So if the baby arrives earlier or later than their estimated due date, we can still ensure that we have the session within the ideal window.
Choosing a Colour Palette For Newborn Photos
At the studio I have a large selection of blankets and wraps in soft, neutral tones. And before each session I’ll work with the family to choose a colour theme that fits their style, and complements their home decor should they choose to display the pictures on the wall.
For this baby’s session his parents chose a dark grey palette which works really well in colour and in black and white.

Baby Portraits and Family Portraits
During the newborn session I spent the majority of the time photographing the new baby. I always take a baby-led approach and follow each baby’s lead. So if they need to pause for a feed, nappy change or cuddle we will do just that. I build plenty of time into the session to allow for these breaks, so there’s no rush.
At the end of the session we’ll take parent and baby photographs and family photographs. You can see a few of the photographs I took for this family in this post.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing some of my favourite photographs from this newborn baby boy’s session. If you’re thinking about booking a newborn photo shoot it’s best to get in touch to book your session before your baby is born as I can be booked up weeks or months in advance.
