Barnes Newborn Photography | Natural Newborn Portraits
I’m excited to share this baby boy’s newborn photo shoot with you today, which took place at my South West London studio when he was just under two weeks old.
The ideal time for a newborn session is when babies are between 5 and 14 days old, so this was perfect timing. During this window babies typically enjoy being curled up in womb-like poses, which makes the newborn photography poses comfortable for them. At this age babies will also spend most of the day sleeping and are most likely to be settled and relaxed during their shoot.
Having the shoot so soon after your baby is born means that it’s best to plan ahead so most families book their session before their baby is born. Because babies rarely arrive on time, I make a note of their due date when they book and then we confirm the date of their session once their baby arrives.

Choosing a colour palette for the newborn photo shoot
At the studio I have a large selection of blankets and wraps in soft, neutral tones. And before each session I’ll work with the family to choose a colour theme that fits their style, and complements their home decor should they choose to display the pictures on the wall.
For this baby’s session his parents chose to mix two colours – white and light grey. Two colours that work really well together, and complement their decor at home.

Time for Family Portraits
During a newborn session I’ll spend the majority of the time photographing the new baby, and take a baby-led approach. I’ll follow each baby’s lead and if they need to pause for a feed, nappy change or cuddle we will do just that. I build plenty of time into the session to allow for these breaks, so there’s no rush.
Whilst I’m photographing the baby, parents can relax. My studio is designed to be a calm, relaxed space. I have a selection of organic teas coffee and snacks for them to enjoy, as well as baby change, feeding pillows, and organic toiletries on hand. Having a new baby can feel like a bit of a whirlwind and my priority is for parents to feel relaxed and comfortable and have an enjoyable experience.
At the end of the session we’ll take parent and baby photographs and family photographs. You can see a few of the photographs I took for this family here:
