The Best Time for Baby Photos: A Simple Guide to Your Baby’s First Year

One of the most common questions parents ask when booking baby photography is “When is the best age for photos?”
It’s an understandable question. Your baby changes so quickly in the first year, and with so many milestones packed into a short space of time, it can be hard to know when to invest in documenting them with professional photographs.
The simple answer is this: there isn’t one single best age. Each stage of your baby’s first year offers something different, and the right time depends on what you’d love your photographs to capture.
I’m Clare, I’m a newborn and baby photographer based on the London / Surrey border, close to Hampton Court and I’ve been photographing babies for the last ten years.
This guide breaks down the best ages for baby photos, exactly as they tend to unfold across the first year, so you can choose the stage that feels right for you. If you’d like a more detailed explanation of how each stage differs, you can read my full guide on the best age for baby photos here.

Baby Photography Timing Checklist
1. Newborn (Around 5–14 Days)
This is the earliest stage for baby photos and is often associated with very soft, peaceful images.
At this age, babies are usually very sleepy and naturally love to be curled up, having only recently arrived in the world. Sessions tend to be slow, calm and unhurried, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling.
This stage is ideal if you want to capture
- Just what your baby looked like in their precious first days
- Sleepy, still moments
- Very small, delicate details
Newborn sessions are less about interaction and more about preserving how tiny and new everything feels in those first days.
2. Around 3–4 Months
This is a stage that often surprises parents, and one that is frequently overlooked.
By three to four months, your baby is becoming more alert and engaged with the people around them. Eye contact is stronger, expressions are more varied, and there’s often a real sense of personality beginning to emerge.
What makes this age special:
- Beautiful eye contact
- Early smiles and expressions
- Strong connection with parents
This stage works particularly well for relaxed, natural baby photography that focuses on interaction rather than milestones. Babies can tire quickly at this age, so a short shoot (such as my mini milestone sessions) or a shoot that allows plenty of time for rest breaks works best.
3. Around 6–9 Months (Sitting Stage)
This is one of the most popular stages for baby photography, and for good reason…it’s pure joy!
Most babies at this age can sit confidently without support, which opens up a huge range of photographic possibilities. Babies are often full of expression, laughter and curiosity, but not yet constantly on the move.
What’s wonderful about this stage:
- Confident sitting
- Big smiles and laughter
- A lovely balance of personality and calm
If you’re looking for joyful, expressive images that really show who your baby is becoming, this stage is often ideal.
4. Around 12 Months (First Birthday)
By the time your baby reaches their first birthday, they’ve changed enormously.
Some babies are crawling or walking, others are standing with support, and most are bursting with curiosity and independence. Sessions at this age tend to be lively, playful and full of movement.
This stage is perfect for:
- Celebrating your baby’s first year
- Capturing individuality and character
- Marking a major milestone
First birthday sessions feel very different from newborn photography — they’re energetic, joyful and a wonderful way to celebrate how far your baby has come.

How to Choose the Best Age for Your Baby Photos
Rather than asking “What’s the best age?”, it can be more helpful to ask:
- Do I want peaceful, sleepy or playful images?
- Am I drawn to tiny details or big expressions?
- Do I want stillness, interaction or movement?
- Do I want to capture one stage, or multiple stages?
There is no wrong choice. Each stage offers something meaningful, and the best time is the one that reflects what you want to remember most about this chapter of your baby’s life.

Final Thoughts
Your baby’s first year is full of milestones – each one a little different to the others.
Whether you choose newborn photos, sitting baby portraits or first birthday images, the magic is in capturing this version of your baby, exactly as they are right now. I hope that understanding what each stage offers helps you to make an informed decision about what is right for your family.
