A 5 Week Old Newborn Photo Shoot in London
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of photographing this gorgeous baby boy and his parents when he was 5 weeks old. He came to my studio for an older newborn session, which is specially designed for families with babies aged 2 to 8 weeks.
Between 2 and 8 weeks babies change and grow so much. In the first 2 weeks babies are often still very sleepy and are only awake for short periods. They also enjoy being curled up in newborn poses. As the weeks pass, babies spend longer and longer periods awake and start to enjoy stretching out. The older newborn session is designed to capture this short stage with a mixture of sleepy and awake photographs of baby on their own, and of the whole family together with their new arrival.
A Baby Led Approach To Older Newborn Photography
Although most 5 week old babies are much more alert than brand new babies, I find that it’s usually possible to capture some sleepy photographs at this stage. Keeping older newborn babies relaxed enough to pose them, and capture sleepy photographs is a delicate balance of wrapping, timing, white noise and warmth.
For this reason I take a baby-led approach and follow each baby’s pace in each session. This gorgeous baby boy was ready to sleep deeply at two points during his session so we alternated between capturing sleepy photographs and photographs of him where he was awake.
